When is it legal to use your high beams?

Using high beams is legal when driving on dark roads with no oncoming traffic because they significantly enhance visibility by illuminating a larger stretch of the roadway and providing better distance perception. High beams are designed to be used in areas where there are no other vehicles and minimal ambient light, as they allow the driver to see hazards, animals, and any obstacles well in advance.

In contrast, using high beams on well-lit roads decreases visibility for yourself and others and can be distracting. During foggy conditions, high beams can reflect off the fog, causing glare and reducing visibility, which is why fog lights or low beams are preferred. Additionally, limiting high beams strictly to rural areas does not consider the fact that they can be beneficial in dark, traffic-free environments regardless of location. Therefore, the use of high beams should always consider the visibility of other road users and the current driving conditions.
