When is it appropriate to use high beams?

Using high beams is appropriate on open country roads when there’s no oncoming traffic because they provide a significantly brighter and more focused light beam that extends the driver's visibility. This is particularly beneficial in rural or less populated areas where street lighting may be minimal or nonexistent. High beams can illuminate a greater distance ahead, making it easier to spot obstacles, animals, or other hazards on the roadway.

In contrast, high beams should not be used in foggy conditions or urban areas. In fog, rain, or snow, high beams can cause glare that reflects back at the driver and reduces visibility. In urban settings, where there is likely to be more lighting and oncoming traffic, low beams are favored to avoid blinding other drivers. High beams are also not appropriate at all times, as their misuse can create dangerous driving conditions for both the driver and others on the road.
